May 11: Two Difficult Topics and Two Important Meetings

On May 11 the future Junior 8 Summit participants continued their pre-summit preparation and met with a 2006 Junior 8 Summit delegate Tatiana Ushakova and with V. V. Markovchin, advisor to the Deputy Minister of Education in Russia. Markovchin plans to accompany the group to Germany.

On this day, Friday, the Junior 8 Russian delegation studied the topics “The World Economy,” “Protection of Intellectual Property,” and “The Economy of Africa.” Afterwards, the teens had the opportunity to ask Mr. Markovchin pertinent questions about their future careers and higher education.

Meeting Tatiana Ushakova was especially important for the delegation members. Anna Filippova said, “Thank you so much Tanya. She told us things which others simply couldn’t have.”

Tatiana emphasized that participating in the summit is a huge job. It’s important to correctly take charge of all of the opportunities that are offered to you: to represent Russia at the J8 Summit, and returning home, to carry out the decisions that were made at the summit, and to engender these ideas in your fellow countrymen through the mass media.

Tatiana’s parting words for the members of the Russian Junior 8 delegation were that the meeting with the G8 leaders is not the most important aspect of the summit. (Tatiana was chosen to represent the Russian teens at this meeting last year). It’s not worth it to make this your primary goal. It’s much more essential to fully realize the responsibility that the delegation members have, to pay close attention to one another, to support each other, to function as a real team.
