Angelika Isaeva Meets with the G8 Leaders
The Russian delegation to the J8 Summit, which is now taking place in the capital of Italy, unanimously selected Angelika Isaeva as their representative to the meeting with the G8 leaders. On July 9, she will be among those who will present the results of the work of the J8 Summit to the G8 leaders.
On the first day of the J8 Summit, Angelika Isaeva, a graduate of Sochi Gymnasium No. 8, became a member of the work group responsible for the preparation and finalization of the outcome document from the J8 Summit. On June 6, all of the members of the Russian delegation agreed that Angelika would be their representative at the meeting with the G8 leaders which she would attend with her colleagues from other countries.
Like all of the members of the Russian delegation, Angelika has been a frequent participant and winner of All-Russia, regional, and city Olympiads in different topical areas. She is on the School Council, and dreams of working in the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Angelika enjoys studying languages (i.e., English and French), literature, and history. She participates in track and field athletics, likes to cook and do needlework.
Angelika Isaeva, “We must do everything possible to solve such problems as the economic crisis, poverty in developing countries, and global climate change. I am an optimist. I believe that the future has to be wonderful. Thus, I am doing everything possible to make it happen. I believe that participating in the J8 Summit will give me the opportunity to have a greater sense that our planet’s future depends not only on government leaders, but also on individual people like us. I am listening closely to the opinions of all the J8 Summit participants. It’s important for me to know what they think. We are working together and helping each other. I am happy that we can really work as a team. We can coordinate our actions and opportunities. And we can put all of our efforts into solving these global problems. I am eager to share the results of the J8 Summit with the G8 leaders and particularly with Dmitry Anatolyevich Medvedev.”
Gleb Nikitin, a participant in the 2007 J8 Summit, represented our country at the meeting with the G8 leaders in 2007 in Germany. He congratulated Angelika Isaeva and called for the Russian delegation to actively support her. He comments, “It’s a chance which likely happens only once in a lifetime. I hope that Angelika will get the very most out of this meeting. To be the representative to the meeting of the G8 leaders is a great responsibility and not all that easy.
The closer the day of meeting comes, the higher the stress level. Additionally, being a member of the work group responsible for preparing the outcome document is especially tense during
the final days before the meeting. Good luck! Have Patience and Fortitude!”
Tatiana Ushakova represented the Russian delegation at the first meeting between young people and the J8 leaders, which took place in Russia in 2006. She also shared her experience with Angelika. “Congratulations! You have the unique opportunity to voice the ideas of youth from different countries at the very highest level. I’m confident that you will represent our country and the work of the J8 participants with dignity. I wish you an interesting and pleasant time communicating with the G8 leaders.”
The Russian delegation began their work at the J8 Summit in Italy on July 3, 2009. This year the J8 Summit will include not only teens from the G8 countries, but also delegations from Brazil, Mexico, the Republic of South Africa, India, Egypt, and China.
The first days of the summit were devoted to getting acquainted with the other J8 participants, technical details about the organization of their work, and touring the “Eternal City” of Rome. On July 4, a promotional event for the mass media was held in the square by the Colosseum. At noon, a giant ear (i.e., 4 meters high, 4 meters wide, and 1 meter deep) was set up on this square. The young J8 diplomats placed notes with their messages to the G8 leaders inside of the ear. On June 5, the teens got down to business with the serious work of the summit. There were four basic topic for discussion: (a) climate change, (b) the economic crisis and protecting children, (c) poverty in developing countries with a focus on Africa, and (d) education.
Russian delegation members quickly took leadership positions in all of the above work groups. “To our delight, and at the same time, unfortunately, our delegation again was one of the most thoroughly prepared groups to discuss serious global issues,” commented the Assistant Advisor to the Minister of Education Science, V. V. Markovichin, who accompanied the Russian delegation to Italy.
The work of groups dealing with organizational and technical issues took place in parallel with that of the above groups. Again, Russian delegation members fully participated as follows:
-drafting-preparing the outcome document-Angelika Isaeva-Sochi
-press-media coverage, working with the mass media-Roman Chukov, Stavropol
-cultural-organizing cultural events-Uliya Kylaeva, Yelista
-evaluation-evaluating operating conditions and the organizational structure of the summit-Ksenia Kozhina, Volskiy
This year the program of the J8 Summit also includes a series of high-level official activities. On July 6 the official opening of the J8 Summit took place at the palace of the Prime Minister of Italy. On July 9 there will be a meeting of the selected J8 delegates with the leaders of the G8 countries. Additionally all of the J8 Summit participants will meet with the leader of Italy’s Parliament and key parliamentarians. On July 10 an official meeting with the mayor of Rome is planned for the J8 Summit participants.
Information about the J8 Summit
In 2006, when Russia hosted the G8 Summit for the first time, the J8 Summit was officially included in the program of activities for the G8 leaders. At this time, July 2006, the first J8 Summit took place in St. Petersburg in which teens representing the G8 countries met together.
Each year, when the G8 Summit takes place outside of Russia, a Russian delegation, selected from one of the federal districts through a stiff competition, is sent to the summit. The delegate members take part in an intensive training session prior to their summit participation. In 2009 the most well-educated, talented, active, and patriotic teens were selected from the Southern Federal District.
Traditionally, through an official order from the Ministry of Education and Science, St. Petersburg State University is responsible for the selection and training of the delegation. The 2009 project was carried out by the Rational Reserve Recruitment Agency. The partners in this project were: Donsckoi State Technical University, the Southern Federal University, the Administration of the Rostov Region, Ms. Taranroga, representative of UNICEF in Russia, and the Amway Company.
