The Competition Committee of the Russian Ministry of Education and Science and St. Petersburg State University (SPBGU) has made the final determination as to who will represent the Russian Federation at the J8 Summit. This summit will take place in July 2009 in Italy concurrently with the G8 Summit.
Each year, when Russia is not the presiding country of the G8 Summit, high school students from one of the Russian Federal Districts are sent to represent the country at the J8 Summit. This year the delegation is made up of four young people from the Southern Federal District. Each of the eight countries represented at the G8 Summit selects four teens to attend the J8 Summit. The procedure for selecting the delegation to the J8 Summit varies from country to country.
The members of the Russian delegation to the 2009 J8 Summit are:
1. Isaeva Angelika, age 17, Public School gymnasium No. 8, Sochi, Krasnodarsk Territory
2. Kozhina Ksenia, age 17, Public School No. 1, Volskiy, Volgorad Oblast
3. Chukov Roman, age 16, Public School No. 25, Stavropol, Stavropol Territory
4. Khulaeva Uliya, age 17, Center for Gifted Children, Kalmika Republic, Yelistinsk Lycee, Yelista, Kalmikia Republic
The members of the Russian delegation will discuss the following topics with their peers from the G8 countries, as well as the developing countries represented at the J8 Summit:
1. Global warming and climate change
2. Poverty and development
3. Surviving children who are HIV-positive or have AIDS
4. The world economic crisis
Their discussions will take place parallel with the work of the G8 Summit. As a result of their dialogue, the teens from the eight countries making up the G8, will prepare an official letter to the G8 leaders which reflects their combined ideas on how to effectively deal with the issues contained in the above topics.
The above four teens were selected from a group of eight finalists who had earlier been winners of the contest “The World through the Eyes of Youth.” The four teens, not selected for the delegation to the J8 Summit, will attend summits in Ekaterinburg in the middle of June. Representatives of the Shanghai Cooperation (SCO) and of the BRIC Countries (i.e. Brazil, Russia, India, and China) will take part in these summits. The task of the four young people is to determine if they can organize a group of youth, similar to the J8, to take part in each of the above summits and share their ideas with the Russian Ministry of Education and Science and the Presidential Administration of the Russian Federation.
The members of the second delegation are:
1. Kazharova Lyana, age 17, Public School Lycee No. 2, Nalchik, Karbardino-Balkarian Republic
2. Shikametova Dinara, age 16, Public School No. 9, Nalchik, Karbardino-Balkarian Republic
3. Golovanov Lev, age 17, Public School Gymnasium No. 1, Volgorad, Volgorad Oblast
4. Gaev Zayrbek, age 17, Public School No. 44, Vladikavkas, Northern Osetia-Alania Republic
Those selected to participate in both of the above delegations went through three stages of stiff competition to receive their place. All of these teens are excellent students, have participated and won Olympiads at the city and national level, speak English fluently, have well-rounded, content-rich knowledge related to the topics of the summits, have good public-speaking skills, and can work effectively as a team member. The delegation to the J8 Summit was selected during the time the teens were in St. Petersburg undergoing training to become young diplomats.
The teens participated in training sessions conducted by professors from SPSGU and invited specialists in relevant areas. Their preparatory work for summit participation included: sessions with psychologists, lessons on the topics to be discussed at the J8 Summit (including lessons in English), and a master class on working with the mass media. During their week in St. Petersburg, the future diplomats met with M. I Krotov, the General Secretary of the Inter-Parliamentary Assembly of the CIS Countries and also with N. M. Kropachev, the Rector of SPBGU and toured both St. Petersburg and SPBGU. In addition, delegation members to the 2006, 2007, and 2008 J8 Summits shared their experiences on being a J8 participant. The eight young people also spent a few days in Moscow. In the Russian capital they met with A. A. Fursenko, the Minister of Education and Science, as well as with A. V. Dvorkovich, Assistant to the President of the Russian Federation. The group also viewed the Russian State Duma and Moscow State University.
