GLEB NIKITIN WILL REPRESENT THE RUSSIAN JUNIOR 8 DELEGATION AT THE MEETING WITH G8 LEADERS
Nikitin was elected unanimously with an open vote by delegation members. Voting took place after an intense discussion during which two candidates were considered: Olga Peshekhonova from Vyborg (Leningrad Oblast) and Gleb Nikitin (Pskov).
A day earlier, Olga Peshekhonova had been chosen by all of the Junior 8 delegates to represent them at a press conference with Goodwill Ambassador Roger Moore, which took place on June 5 in Berlin. Thus, taking this into account, the Russian delegation decided on Gleb, considering their choice not only fair, but also judicious. As the young Russians commented, “We want to present our delegation and our country from different perspectives.”
Nikitin commented, “Of course I’m very pleased that my team members have confidence in me to represent their views at the meeting with G8 leaders, but I certainly don’t want to overrate my role in the delegation. I believe that Dima’s delegation work has been more important and difficult. (Dimitry Dubovskikh is in the working group of teen delegates, from all G8 countries, which is composing the letter from the Junior 8 Summit to the G8 leaders).
The selected representative to the meeting with G8 leaders voiced concern that making such a choice would harm the unity of the group. However, this did not happen. As Ksenia Nikitorova noted, “An open vote rallied us together even more.”
Sixteen-year-old Gleb Nikitin is a tenth grade student at the Lyceum of the Humanities in Pskov. He completed a specialized music school studying the saxophone and was a participant of the “Assembly of the Stars,” a gathering of Olympiad winners. In addition, Nikitin has also taken part in scientific-research and creative works competitions, as well as winning sports contests. He enjoys studying foreign languages and is active in organizing social-cultural activities at his lyceum. His dream is to be the Mayor of Pskov.
The meeting with G8 leaders will take place on June 7 in Heligendamm, Germany. The Junior 8 representatives, selected by their respective delegations, will present a summary of their collective work to the heads of the G8 countries.
